The VW group bought simply 110,000 vehicles powered by compressed pure fuel (CNG) worldwide final 12 months, not sufficient to justify additional funding, VW’s head of improvement Frank Welsch informed the Handelsblatt monetary day by day. Although manufacturing of current fashions powered by the choice power will not be halted instantly, “there will be no successors to these cars,” Welsch mentioned. “It never really resonated with customers,” he added.
The exit from CNG will permit VW to focus extra strongly on zero-emissions electrical automobiles, Welsch mentioned, which the corporate expects to go mainstream within the coming years. Like rival carmakers, Volkswagen is investing billions in e-cars because the auto business shifts to cleaner engines to adjust to harder emissions rules.
“If we are serious about the mobility shift and environmental targets, then we must focus on battery-powered electric engines. Everything else is a waste (of efforts)”, Welsch informed Handelsblatt. The 12-brand VW group, which incorporates Porsche, Seat, Skoda and Audi, has set itself the aim of promoting 32 million electrical and hybrid automobiles by 2029.
